Mainly flat and dry, Almería has provided an ideal setting for many a western film and there are still complete wild-west sets to be found dotted about. Sensibly the province has cashed in on its two other important virtues - the greatest number of sunshine hours in Spain and some excellent sandy beaches. Fortunately, while both have attracted large numbers of visitors, the resulting development has been limited.
Both along the coast and inland are some worthwhile places to visit - namely, the Cabo de Gato on the south-eastern tip, with some excellent and empty beaches hidden between cliffs and Las Alpujarras which stretch into Granada. Finally the town of Mojácar, while not undiscovered, offers a rather fashionable place to be based. As a whole, Almería has some excellent spots for bird-watchers, especially with the lagoons and dunes of the volcanic-based Cabo de Gata Natural Park.
