If you like spectacular settings, panoramic views and places with character then make the trip to Cuenca. The old town rises high above the Río Huécar and the gorges that surround it, offering some breathtaking vistas from many points close to the Plaza Mayor. The town's most stunning sight is, without doubt, the Casas Colgadas or "the hanging houses" which, bunched together, perch precariously at the top of a steep cliff. Try to see them lit up at night, as the effect is sensational. By day, the finest of these houses is a highly-rated modern art museum, privately run by some of Spain's leading artists. |
