The name Rioja conjures up one image - wine. Yes, this is the home to some of Spain's and the world's best red wines. Fields of vines are abundant and wine villages make wonderful stops to taste the local produce. Haro is perhaps the best place to do just that, however just across the province frontier in Álava (in the País Vasco) are several other wine villages and places to stay.
La Rioja is not all wine though and there other places of interest dotted about. The main town of Logroño is a pleasant stopover yet the real beauty of the region is in the countryside. The Monasterio de San Millán de Cogolla (see below) makes a delightful stopover.
