| The capital of the province no longer plays the key role it used to during the middle ages, but still makes a pleasant if somewhat uninspiring stopover. More appealing are the rural areas surrounding it.
Palencia is home to dozens of castles and many charming and tranquil villages as well as rich Romanesque architecture, found mostly in the north of the region around Aguilar de Campo and, in particular, the town of Frómista.
