If you want the best possible bullfighting experience in Madrid (or beyond) then let us arrange for Tom Kallene, our friend and collaborator, to host you for the afternoon and evening. Not only will he open doors that remain closed to others, he will make the whole bullfighting experience – leading up to, during and after the Corrida – a wonderful lifetime memory for you. Let his biography do the talking…
Tom Kallene hails from a small herring-fishing island off the west coast of Sweden and came to Madrid to live in 1990. In Spain he drifted into publishing, where he edited a cigar guide and a champagne publication. Television work followed, co-hosting magazine programs on cable and national television. He has also produced and collaborated on various documentary films on Spain and Spanish (sub)culture for an international audience, including a Channel 4 documentary about bullfighting, the Madrid segment of the popular travel series "Sin Cities", and an award-winning film about Orson Welles in Spain. He was the local producer for a book of photographs on "Disappearing Spain" by the American photographer Andy Andersen. For several years, he spread wit and wisdom on Cadena SER, Spain's leading private radio station, before being lured away by Radio Nacional de España to co-host a daily national radio show on RNE-1. He is the co-author of "Onderou", a Kerouac-inspired "road book" set in the Iberian peninsula, published in November 2006 and already in its second edition. He is currently writing a book about Spain and the Spanish, as the nation trembles in anticipation. Bullfighting is a lifelong passion for Tom—the very thing that first brought him to Spain—and he still cannot recount Julio Aparicio's unforgettable faena of May 18, 1994 without choking up with emotion.
His feel for bulls and bullfighting served him well this year when Televisión Española asked him to join its team offering live daily coverage of the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona in July 2008. Years of following the "fiesta" around Spain have earned him many friends and contacts among matadors and other bullfight professionals, giving him access to a closed world which is difficult to penetrate, even for Spaniards.
They don’t get more expert or passionate than Tom – enjoy an unforgettable day with him as your host.
